Philip Harris, 2012 English, after graduating and being rejected from the five grad schools, took two years off. I was admitted to San Francisco State University's MFA Fiction program in 2014. In the three years of Harris’ MFA, he wrote two novels, a collection of short fiction, a collection of short nonfiction, and a chapbook of prose poetry, which has been accepted for publication through Nomadic Press. The chapbook is a collection of prose poems dealing with identity and culture. Harris cites his time at HSU in the Writing Practices program as establishing the foundation of his writing. “The Flowers in my Mothers' Name” debuts this fall.

Robert "Robin" Huber, 1971 Theatre Design M.A., went on to earn a Ph.D. in Theatre History from the University of Southern California. He is recognized as the foremost authority on The Merced (1870), Los Angeles' first permanent professional theatre. Huber retired simultaneously from both the California State University and Community College systems in 2009. He had taught at CSULA, Dominguez Hills, Golden West, and Cerritos colleges. While at Humboldt he was "adopted" by Marine Biology professor Gary Brusca, his family, and fellow professors. Huber is now embracing that Humboldt natural sciences spirit by working as a volunteer in natural resources at Chino Hills State Park near his home in Yorba Linda.

Daniel C. Hernandez, 1984 Recreation Administration, recently announced his retirement from the field of parks, recreation, and leisure services. For the past six years he was director of Parks, Recreation, and Community Services for Culver City, Calif. After completing his bachelor’s degree, Hernandez began his fulltime career with the City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department in 1985, overseeing youth sports and special events. In 1996, while serving as Director of Community Services for the City of Carpinteria, he completed his Master’s of Public Administration at CSU Northridge. Hernandez has been a presenter and speaker at both the state and national level.

Ian Thomas McDonald, 1998 Art, will soon celebrate a his 10 year wedding anniversary with another HSU alumni (Natalie Covert, '97 Art). The couple’s daughter, Haddie, is turning 4 years old, and McDonald is starting a new job running the Ceramics department at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan.

Samuel Vogel-Seidenberg, 2010 Film, got married in 2014 and had his first child Zachary on April 9th, 2017. Vogel-Seidenberg is the head men's lacrosse coach at Dominican University of California, an NCAA Division 2 school! Vogel-Seidenberg loves coming to Humboldt to visit and support the Humboldt lacrosse team.

Peter Perrault, 2003 Economics, received a Master’s in Economics from University of San Francisco. He then went on to build and lead the global sustainability program for NetApp, a Fortune 1000 company. Perrault has served as co-chair for an advisory group to the UN Global Compact, was a member of the technical working group establishing GHG accounting standards for the ICT sector under The Carbon Trust and GeSI, and co-chaired the Environment Committee for Silicon Valley Leadership Group. He has held several sustainability consulting positions, is a Sustainability Management Certified Professional (SMCP) and is currently the Sustainability Practice Lead for EnerNOC.

Mildred J. Correa, 2017 Art, had been offered and accepted an incredible full-time career opportunity at a non-profit in her hometown, Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena, Calif. Correa's prior positions during her time at HSU including at the Academic and Career Advising Center, the Library, the Learning Center, and Student Access Gallery guided her to realize that she value working for organizations that positively impact community through design. Correa is happily employed at the Armory where everyday she is spreading awareness about this education and gallery space.

Stefanie Lauren Kalin, 2010 Psychology, is a licensed marriage and family therapist. She has developed her clinical experiences providing mental health services to couples, families, adults with chronic disease, severe, persistent, mental illness, adolescents, and children with chronic trauma and dependency. She specializes in mind-body connection and trauma residency with training in eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). Stefanie met her husband, Rory, in undergrad at HSU and became Mr. and Mrs. Kalin in 2015. They returned to Humboldt in 2017 to begin careers serving Humboldt County. Stefanie will be practicing as a mental health clinician for Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services.

Rory Shane Kalin, 2010 History, is happy to announce he and his wife will be returning to Humboldt County where they met. Kalin is starting a position with the Office of the Humboldt County Counsel as a deputy county counsel in April.

Gary Banuelos, 1979 German, was recently selected as “USDA Pac West Senior Scientist of the Year" for his work on using phytoremediation to clean-up contaminated soils. Earlier in 1992, he was selected as "USDA Early Career Scientist of the Year." After earning his doctorate in plant nutrition from Hohenhiem/Tuebingen Universities in Germany, he worked on developing "green technologies" for remediating contaminated soils and waters worldwide. In addition, he lectures at the University of Zürich in Switzerland, University of Santiago in Chile and at USTC Suzhou in China.
