Robert T. Lackey, Fisheries Biology, 1967

Robert Lackey, after graduation, married fellow Humboldt student, Lana Apparius, then both moved to the University of Maine for Bob’s Master of Science (Zoology/Fisheries), then relocated in 1968 to Colorado State University, where they both graduated (Ph.D., Fisheries and B.S., Speech Therapy). Bob’s jobs at Virginia Tech, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and Oregon State University followed. They have lived in Corvallis, Oregon, for the past 43 years. As a student at Humboldt, Bob lived on campus in the “Game Pens.” 

Frances Boring, Botany, 2004

Frances is now 90 years old and retired. Frances loved college at HSU and sometimes wonders what has happened to classmates in Dr Walker's botany class and a lab mate in another class called Katz. 

Dave Albert, Kinesiology, 1994

Dave recently retired after working over 20 years as a police officer in Santa Cruz. He is currently working part-time in law enforcement training in the Bay Area and otherwise spends time with his wife, three adult kids, and one (so far) grandkid. He frequents Tahoe in the summer at the lake and in the winter on the slopes, he enjoys traveling to as many different Major League Baseball stadiums as possible, and he is still best friends with his old HSU roommate!

Victor Hugo Hernandez ('07), inventor of the ErgoFlex Desk, is excited to announce the upcoming launch of his Kickstarter campaign for the first AI-powered ergonomic desk. The ErgoFlex Desk, designed to sit, stand, tilt, and glide, was inspired by Victor’s passion for innovative design, which began during his time at Cal Poly Humboldt. After moving back to Southern California to care for his mother, Victor returned to school to refine his idea, leading to a patented design that enhances health and productivity. Recently featured on How I Built This, Victor’s journey showcases the impact of Cal Poly’s hands-on learning approach.

Bradley Sabelli, Theatre, 1970

Sabelli recently was elected President of the Arts Council of York County SC. The second largest in the state. Along with this position Sabelli is a Lead Advocate in the South Carolina Alliance government program. He also is the immediate past president of the Catawba River Art Guild in York County. Sabelli serves as a theatre consultant at  George Washington University where he holds the position of Professor Emeritus. Brad is still active in designing productions for National touring companies and regional theatre companies. In addition, his studio artworks are on exhibition in several east coast galleries.       

Heather Sundblad-Rhoade, Journalism, 2003

Heather Sundblad-Rhoade moved away from journalism and public relations and entered the world of business ownership. She purchased a retail business in August 2022 and has now been the owner and operator of a gift shop - Willow & Ash - in Forest Grove, Oregon, for two years. 2024 has been a year of milestones: She celebrated her 20-year anniversary with her husband and watched her daughter graduate from high school and move on to college to work on completing a degree in welding technology.

Jerry Von Dohlen, Geography, 1998

Jerry helped design, map, and, build the first nationwide wireless internet with Metricom INC. in San Jose, California. Moved back to Humboldt County in 2003 and worked with Center Arts Entertainment (CalPolyHumboldtEvents), the Mateel Community Center on Reggae on the River, and, the Black Oak Ranch coordinating parking and traffic at Pignic, Earthdance, The Kate Wolf Memorial Music Festival, and currently Ten Mile Creek Revival.  Currently serving as GIS Coordinator for the County of Humboldt, http://gis.co.humboldt.ca.us, providing data and internships to students with the Geospatial Certificate Program. Jon Pede, Environment & Community (Social Sciences), 1990

Jon Pede retired from education after 33 years. He was a teacher (special education), assistant principal, district-level administrator, professor, and ending as middle school principal. He loved every minute of it and is now looking forward to a quiet life without a whistle, walkie-talkie, and school bells. 

Stephanie Rosier, Psychology, 2014

After graduation, Stephanie worked as a senior client advocate at Humboldt Domestic Violence Services. She then moved on to work as the Early Recovery Specialist at Aegis Treatment Centers in Ventura, California, for six years. In 2022 she moved to Missoula, Montana, where she continued to utilize the skills she learned obtaining her Psychology degree at Humboldt, acting as a mental health coordinator for Missoula County.

Karen Partch (Beal), Social Work, 1983

Karen retired in December 2023 after a long career in both teaching preschool early on and then in social work for 34 years. She worked in adoptions, child protective services, and the bulk of her career as an advocate for children and adults with developmental disabilities. In addition to her paid career, she was a volunteer youth leader through various churches for over 25 years. She is now a California State Parks volunteer and enjoys having more time to be outdoors and engage in her hobbies.
