Well, here we are in 2011. It has been 30 years since Dan and I attended Humboldt State when the Governor was Jerry Brown. This year we have a special treat of BOTH daughters attending HSU. Hollund graduating in May and Lauryl just starting last August. Both pursuing a science track. Both enjoying all that Humboldt has to offer. Lauryl has filled her need for Nordic speed with the new challenge of HSU Women's Crew. The commitment level so high but like the Junior Olympian that she is, she is meeting it full speed ahead. Hollund's graduation looms large and we discover that Jerry Brown will also be signing her diploma when she walks with her class in May. Funny how history repeats itself in such beautiful and unexpected ways.

After college I joined the Peace Corps as a fisheries volunteer in the Dominican Republic. I've worked as a fiseries biologist on the Bering Sea, and managed a salmon hatchery in Washington. Transitioned to environmental work in biotechnology industry, and grew into facilities management role, where I have been able to exercise my passion for sustainable business practices. I am married and have two children, and live in Mountain View, CA.

I was president of the Scientific Steering Committee for the 6th and 7th International Deer Biology Congress (2006 and 2010, respectively, and am serving again for the upcoming 8th congress. Currently I am affiliated with Institute Analysis of Natural Resources (IARN), Universidad Atlántida Argentina in Mar del Plata, Argentina as a Research Scientist. I often work with Werner Flueck, a Swiss who graduated in 1982 from Humboldt with degrees in Wildlife Management and Zoology. We clandestinely eloped 3 months before our graduation so that Werner could receive his green card and then attend graduate school at University of California, Davis. Soon, our marriage will span 29 years. Over the last 20 years, we have worked together on studies related to conservation of the endangered native deer and impacts of exotic deer in Argentina and Chile. Last year we were the main organizers for the 7th International Deer Biology Congress, held in the Huilo Huilo Reserve, Chile, which was the first time the congress was held in Latin America.

I am living in Portland, Oregon with my family. I teach Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science to high school students. I am building on the excellent science education I received at HSU by taking prerequisites to go back to school to study evolutionary psychology. I loved going to school at Humboldt, and I visit the Arcata area with my family every chance I get.

After graduation, 3 years in the Coast Guard, an MS degree from UC Davis and work as a technician with the University of Idaho's horticulture program I was hired as a horticulturist with the Oregon Dept. of Agriculture's Nursery and Christmas Tree program. I retired after 29 years with the ODA. I married Patricia Hatfield nine years ago. Together we have 5 children (2 mine, 3 hers) and 3 grandsons. We're enjoying retirement, traveling wood woorking, birdwatching, gardening and anything eles that looks interesting.
