On a recent visit to HSU, Dan Sealy (‘75, Natural Resources) had a chance to visit his favorite place on campus, the small redwood grove between the biology and wildlife buildings.

It is fitting that Dan’s favorite place on campus would be one of natural beauty. He recently retired from a rewarding 33-year career with the National Park Service and attributes his successful career to his experiences at Humboldt State.

“HSU opened my eyes,” he says. “I met the superintendent of Redwood National Park on a career day and he inspired me to apply to the National Park Service. I ended up working at Muir Woods National Monument as soon as I graduated, which then led to many other opportunities.”

The Forever Humboldt spirit is embodied by Dan through his giving, promoting, and volunteering at Humboldt State. With his quarterly gift to the Humboldt Loyalty Fund, Dan helps support projects across campus that improve the education students at HSU receive. From updates to the biomechanics lab to new equipment for the Coral Sea research vessel, Humboldt Loyalty Fund donors like Dan make a difference on all parts of campus.

For Dan, it’s important his gifts make a broad impact. That’s why gifts to the Humboldt Loyalty Fund are ideal. The funds are pooled with gifts from hundreds of other donors, allowing many different projects to enhance the student experience.

Dan promotes HSU through his volunteer work with the Northcoast Environmental Center, where he works with student interns and serves on the board of directors. He’s also a guest lecturer for a few classes on natural resources policy on campus, and worked with the Office of Philanthropy this year to write a letter to donors encouraging others to join him in giving.

“I speak with students on a regular basis and am completely inspired by their intelligence, dedication, and passion for conservation,” he says. “I am so inspired to know the same passion my friends and I had for caring for our Earth is held by the students of today.”

 “Attending Humboldt opened my eyes to so many new possibilities and changed my life forever,” he says. “I want to give back a little of what Humboldt gave to me.”
