After an amazing, mind-opening, tongue-training Spring Field Study in Oaxaca, Mexico (1984) with Prof. Hal Jackson, I became smitten with Latin culture, Spanish and the travel bug. These passions combined with mountaineering (NOLS 1986) launched me into two marvelous decades of adventures off the beaten path in Mexico (Old and New), Pacific Northwest, Chile, Argentina, and Europe. Moved to Port Townsend, WA, in 2001, now married, with two kids, working as a teacher of Geography, Spanish, Music, and outdoor education. Glad to hear from classmates, travelers. I recently retired for the second time and my wife, Debbie and I moved from Palm Springs, California to Astoria, Oregon. We are glad to be back " in the rain".

Was chosen to receive an "Award of Excellence" from the California Office of Traffic Safety & the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for work to reduce the number of young people injured or killed in car crashes.

June 1, 2009 I began serving in Peace Corps Armenia as a Community and Business Development Volunteer. I am an NGO Development Specialist for a Women's Resource Center in Southern Armenia. I will be completing my service term and moving back to the east coast this summer. I credit my time with the Refugee Extension Program out of HSU's Youth Educational Services for getting me this position. I am very happy to be counted amongst the large and proud group of past HSU students who have served in the US Peace Corps.

Recently appointed Chair of Huemul Task Force in the Species Survival Commission of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Has served as Chair for the Scientific Steering Committee for the 6th and 7th International Deer Biology Congress (Republic of Czech and Chile, respectively) and now serving at same capacity for the upcoming 8th IDBC, which is to be held in Harbin China.

In March 2011 I was hired on as the Sustainability & Waste Coordinator for Humboldt State, after working five years as a Program Manager for a sustainability non-profit. I live in Arcata with my wife and daughter, who will turn 5 in August.

I just accepted an offer of admission into U.C. Berkeley's Asian Studies MA program, and will be focusing on China Studies during the fall of 2011. During the two-year program, I am hoping to take an extra year to study Chinese abroad in both China and Taiwan.
